Copyright Information

The vast majority of published materials are copyrighted. If your packet contains copyrighted materials that do not fall under Cornell licenses, Public Domain, or “Fair Use,” we must ask the owner(s) of the copyright for permission to reproduce it for your class. The Cornell Store and course pack vendor LAD Custom Publishing do not complete a fair use assessment of published materials to be included in course packs. Faculty and instructors may conduct their own fair use assessment by visiting the Cornell University Library Copyright Information Center’s Fair Use Checklist found at the link below. Course materials identified by faculty as falling under Fair Use cannot be printed or distributed for sale (e.g. consignment) through The Cornell Store. Additionally, these course materials once submitted to LAD Custom Publishing will be pursued for copyright permission and may negate any Fair Use assessment conducted. If written permission is received from a publisher providing “gratis” or “fair use” to reproduce content, please provide this information to The Cornell Store when submitting your coursepack information.

Getting Permissions without Royalty Charges

The Cornell Store is a “retail” entity and as copyright permission is requested to copy articles or chapters, publishers generate fees by copyrights holders’ contracts and these fees are passed down to the consumer. You may have the power to get these fees waived or reduced and save students money by seeking “gratis” or “fair use” permission from a publisher. See the “Sample Permission Letter” below for example of how to reach out to a publisher with this type of inquiry. We are happy to provide you with any publisher contact information we have on file.

Obtaining Copyright Permissions

The Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) will process copyright clearances for all faculty and staff seeking copyright permissions. This includes reproduction of course packets for classroom use, and materials for seminars or conferences. The Cornell Store will obtain copyright permissions via LAD Custom Publishing for printing of course packets for the classroom. If you plan to print materials yourself (or at any other printer), you are encouraged to take advantage of our Copyright Permissions Service (CPS). The cost is $20.00 per citation, plus the royalties charged by the Copyright Owners. The cost for letters handled by the CCC is $10.00 per citation. (CCC processes approximately 45% of our permissions). The Cornell Store has a site license to reproduce Harvard Business Cases and Harvard Business Review Articles at a discounted rate.
